The Iowa All-State Music Festival is jointly sponsored and staffed by the IHSMA and IMEA to provide a state-wide selective festival for the instrumental and choral high school musicians of Iowa.

ELIGIBILITY

In addition to the Iowa High School Music Association Constitution, Article VI, Section 1(p. 40), participation is restricted to students from schools that are members of the Iowa High School Music Association and enrolled in grades 9-12 only. Auditioning students must be currently enrolled and in good standing in an appropriate curricular musical ensemble within their school. Instrumentalists wishing to participate would need to be enrolled in a curricular musical ensemble that is instrumental in nature. (typically band or orchestra). Vocalists wishing to participate would need to be enrolled in a curricular musical ensemble that is choral in nature (typically chorus). This should be interpreted as the minimum requirement for school districts to meet. To be considered a member of the respective ensemble, a student must be enrolled and in attendance at a minimum of 50% of the scheduled rehearsal sessions. 9th graders not eligible for a high school curricular ensemble as a result of district grade combinations, i.e., 7-8-9 or 8-9, will be determined to be eligible provided they meet the attendance requirements for a corresponding curricular ensemble as specified above. Membership in curricular ensembles is required for all school districts where such ensembles exist. Note: Students must make a choice in the area they will audition. Students may NOT try out for both vocal and instrumental or on more than one instrument. Penalty for Violation: Removal from All-State for students involved. Do not enter students who have a conflict with any activity. Each student must attend all rehearsals in Ames.

The following fees have been established for the 2013 All-State Festival:

The maximum number of entries permitted by any one school shall be as follows:

Harp and piano entries do not count towards these limits.

The release date of All-State chorus music by Kephart’s Music Center is July 25, 2013. Music will be delivered from Kephart’s Music Center of Decorah, IA, upon receipt of the registration form in the IHSMA office (if not previously ordered). If it does not arrive in a reasonable amount of time, please notify the Association office. Music packages will contain instructions regarding pronunciations and any special instructions for preparation. The patriotic numbers are NOT a part of the vocal registration fee. Schools wishing to obtain additional copies of the choral music for directors, accompanists, or chorus are to call directly to Kephart’s Music Center (1-800-369-9633; fax-563-382-5261) and bill those copies directly to their district. Include a P.O. # for such orders.

Instrumental entries: students selected for participation in the All-State Band or Orchestra will receive their festival music at the audition site upon notification of a successful audition. The All-State instrumental folders (band and orchestra) will contain the parts for “America, the Beautiful” and “The Battle Hymn”.

 

REGISTRATION

Registration for this festival will be online. Instructions for doing so can be found online. The Registration Submission Deadline for All-State is September 12, 2013. The Penalty Submission Deadline is September 19, 2013. A valid check or purchase order number must be submitted online on or before September 12, 2013 for your registration process to be complete without penalty. You know that your registration is complete when the check number or purchase order number you input appears in the bottom left hand corner of your online invoice. To check this you will need to view the invoice after submitting your check or purchase order number. At this point also review your invoice for accuracy, then print it off and take it to your office for payment! If you have a problem contact the IHSMA office immediately. Final payment should be mailed to: Iowa High School Music Association, PO Box 10, Boone, IA 50036-0010. This payment is due 30 days from your registration date.

 

“Trades” in registration, one instrument for another, or one voice part for another, will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. of the Penalty Postmark Deadline (Sept 19). Trades will only be accepted with written verification (letter, e-mail or fax)- no phone calls. These trades carry no penalty and cannot be done online.

 


Clerical errors in registration (wrong instrument or wrong voice part indicated on the Registration Form) can be corrected after the Penalty Postmark Deadline (Sept. 20 or later) by paying a $100.00 per student penalty. Omissions can be corrected after the Penalty Postmark Deadline by paying the registration fee, penalty (50% of registration fee up to $25), and an additional penalty of $100 per student. This penalty MUST be received in the IHSMA office by Friday, Oct. 18. If the penalty is not received by this date, an audition will not be permitted. The school must pay this penalty. Audition times for these students will be existing “scratch” slots or they will be auditioned at the end of the instrument classification for that particular instrument.

AUDITION PROCEDURES

  1. Schedules will be created and mailed to schools by audition managers. Should you fail to receive a schedule, contact the manager of your audition site.
  2. Schools must appear at their assigned time or, when possible, earlier due to scratches unless affected by emergency situations. Penalty: Forfeiture of right to appear.
  3. It is recommended, whenever possible, that directors "scratch" their last entry as opposed to their first. This will shorten the day for everyone.
  4. Directors may not enter the audition room, nor attempt to communicate with the auditor in any way. If communication with an auditor must take place, it may only occur through the room monitor or center manager.
  5. Band and orchestra members will be excused only after results have been posted and music assigned. A recall hearing may be scheduled before final selection is made. A recall list will be posted at noon for clarinets, flutes and trumpets to prevent excessively long waits for students not still under consideration. Students failing to appear for recalls will be eliminated from consideration for participation. Brass, woodwind, percussion, and string bass students may be assigned to band or orchestra. Do not enter students who are unwilling to accept an assignment to either group.
  6. It is mandatory the posted names, instruments, parts, etc., be left intact and posted until the conclusion of the audition day.
  7. Names of alternates selected will be posted; however, there will be no music issued to these students. No instrumental alternates will be selected for participation after Tuesday, November 12th. Choral alternates may be selected up until the first rehearsal of the All-State Chorus.
  8. Accepted students’ names will be printed in the All-State program. Be certain they are printed legibly on the audition cards.
  9. All students accepted into the Chorus, Band, or Orchestra should report to the audition site office immediately following notification of their acceptance. Band and Orchestra students should pick up their assigned folder. Chorus students should pick up their information packet.
  10. Selection of band, orchestra, and chorus is based on the assumption competent players and singers are available. Auditors will be instructed to fill the quota for each center only with students who meet or exceed the required standards for acceptance.
  11. Directors Note: Housing requests will be submitted online this year!!!. Please submit your requests immediately following auditions. Housing requests will not be accepted until October 26.
  12. Students are expected to audition using music that is in compliance with U.S. Copyright Law. See the U.S. Copyright Law and IHSMA Festivals section found in the IHSMA Fall Bulletin.

 


The instrumentation of the All-State Band is as follows:

All brass and woodwind entries are required to audition in the following manner:

  1. Play a solo of choice (need not be memorized) unaccompanied. The length of the segment you choose should be approximately 1 minute in length; maximum of 1:20.
  2. Play the etudes listed below.
  3. Play any of the MAJOR scales memorized in two or more octaves where possible,ascending and descending. MAJOR scales must be performed in 16th notes at a metronome speed of quarter note = 88. A Metronome will be used to establish tempo. Major scales must be performed all tongued ascending and all slurred descending OR all slurred ascending and all tongued descending. NO OTHER ARTICULATION VARIATION WILL BE ACCEPTABLE!! Either of the following rhythm patterns is acceptable:
  4. Play a chromatic scale over the complete range of the instrument, ascending and descending. Chromatic scales must be performed in 16th notes at a MINIMUM tempo of quarter note = 88. No specific articulation pattern is required.
  5. To insure instrumentation for piccolo, the following will apply: All 1st Flutes in band and orchestra will be required to audition on piccolo as well as flute on Thursday at ISU as a part of the chair placement procedure. Failure to comply with this requirement will automatically place those students at the bottom of the 1st Flute section.
  6. To insure instrumentation for English Horn parts, the following will apply: All Oboes have been given first and second oboe parts for the All-State band or orchestra. All players will have the possibility to be the first chair oboe player in the All-State Band or orchestra. First and second oboe part assignments will be designated after the chair placement auditions in Ames. To be considered for the first oboe part students must audition on English Horn. The English Horn chair may be rotated through the festival.
  7. To insure instrumentation for Eb Clarinet parts, the following will apply: All 1st Clarinets in band will be required to audition on Eb Clarinet as well as Bb Clarinet (if parts exist) on Thursday at ISU as a part of the chair placement procedure. Failure to comply with this requirement will automatically place those students at the bottom of the 1st Clarinet section.

Percussionists: The All-State percussion audition will consist of the following:
  1. Solo or etude of choice performance on the percussion instrument (snare drum, timpani, or keyboard percussion) which represents the performance medium of greatest skill, talent, and confidence.
    THE SOLO/ETUDE IS NOT TO EXCEED ONE MINUTE, THIRTY SECONDS IN LENGTH.
  2. Basic Technique Snare Drum:
    1. Play a multiple bounce (orchestral) roll at the performers maximum controlled speed from soft to loud to soft.
    2. Play a double stroke (rudimental) roll from slow to fast to slow at a constant volume.
    3. Demonstrate proper grip and stroke.
    4. Demonstrate correct tone to include tuning of batter and snare heads, proper snare strainer tension, proper playing area, and choice of sticks.
    Keyboard Percussion:
    1. Play any of the major scales, ascending and descending, two octaves (memorized) in 16th notes at a set metronome tempo of quarter note = 88. Either of the following patterns is acceptable:
    2. Play a chromatic scale (memorized) the full range of the instrument, ascending and descending, in 4 - 16th notes at a minimum tempo of quarter note = 88.
    3. Demonstrate proper grip and stroke.
    4. Demonstrate correct tone to include proper playing area and choice of mallets.
    Timpani: [Tuning gauges are not to be used.]
    1. Perform a glissando roll ascending and descending through the full range of the drum chosen.
    2. Tune to a required pitch chosen by auditor.
    3. Demonstrate proper grip and stroke.
    4. Demonstrate correct tone to include proper playing area and choice of mallets.
    Crash Cymbals:
    1. Perform crashes at various volume levels.
    2. Demonstrate proper angle/position/grip.

  1. String auditors will select the following strings for the All-State Orchestra:

  3. The number of strings to be selected at each center is determined by the All-State Orchestra Chair after all entries have been received.
  4. All string entries will be required to audition in the following manner:
    1. Play a solo of choice (need not be memorized) unaccompanied. The length of the segment you choose should be approximately 1 minute in length; maximum of 1:20. The String Audition card will include a caption line for the Solo.
    2. Play the required excerpts of the All-State selections (These works are in public domain or variances have been allowed for this use.) String audition excerpts are available for download from the IHSMA website on July 25 or they may be obtained by calling the IHSMA office and requesting them.
    3. Violins, Violas, Cellos: Play any of the major scales (memorized) up to and including 5 flats and 5 sharps in 16th notes (16th notes only – NO 1/8th note on the tonic) at a metronome speed of a quarter note = 60 (ascending and descending). A scale of 3 octaves is required for violin and cello. Violas - 3 octaves are required for major scales C, Db, D, Eb, and E; major scales F, G, Ab, A, Bb and B may be performed either 2 or 3 octaves. Style of bowing is at the discretion of the performer.
    4. String Bass: Play any of the major scales (memorized) up to and including 5 flats and 5 sharps in 16th notes (16th notes only – NO 1/8th note on the tonic) at a metronome speed of a quarter note = 50, ascending and descending. All string bass scales will be two octaves. Style of bowing is to be at the discretion of the performer.
  5. Harpists should prepare an audition cd/mp3 and send it, postmarked by October 21, to Ann Osborne, Indianola High School, 1304 East 1st Avenue, Indianola, IA 50125. Students selected will be announced via the IHSMA website on Thursday, October 24. The tape should contain the following:
    1. A two-minute portion of a solo or etude of their choice
    2. The excerpts that are available online or from the IHSMA office
    3. Label showing the student’s name, school and phone number
  6. To insure instrumentation for piccolo, the following will apply: ALL 1st Flutes in band and orchestra will be required to audition on piccolo as well as flute on Thursday at ISU as a part of the chair placement procedure. Failure to comply with this requirement will automatically place those students at the bottom of the 1st Flute section.
  7. To insure instrumentation for English Horn parts, the following will apply: All oboes have been given first and second oboe parts for the All-State band or orchestra. All players will have the possibility to be the first chair oboe player in the All-State Band or orchestra. First and second oboe part assignments will be designated after the chair placement auditions in Ames. To be considered for the first oboe part students must audition on English Horn. The English Horn chair may be rotated through the festival.
  8. To insure instrumentation for Eb Clarinet parts, the following will apply: All 1st Clarinets in band and All Clarinets in the orchestra will be required to audition on Eb Clarinet as well as Bb Clarinet (if parts exist) on Thursday at ISU as a part of the chair placement procedure. Failure to comply with this requirement will automatically place those students at the bottom of the 1st Clarinet section in the band or at the bottom of their assigned part in the orchestra.
  9. All accepted All-State Orchestra clarinets, bassoons, trumpets and tenor trombones will receive all parts to audition on for the festival. All players will have the chance to audition for 1st chair. Horns, bass trombones, baritones and tubas will still receive their assigned parts.
  10. All initial and recall string auditions will be open auditions (not blind). Chair placement auditions in Ames will be blind auditions.
  11. Audition excerpts will be posted online (www.ihsma.org) at 5:00 AM and at each audition site at 8:00 A.M. on October 26, 2013.
  12. The All-State Chorus will be performing The Roof by Andrea Ramsey. This work calls for a violin solo. Interested accepted violins must make an audition CD/MP3 and send it to:

    The audition CD/MP3 must be postmarked by Wednesday, October 30th. All submissions must be performed with accompaniment. An MP3 recording of the accompaniment can be found on the IHSMA website (www.ihsma.org). Music for this solo can be found on the back page of the published choral octavo or can be obtained by contacting the IHSMA office. Please label the audition materials clearly with the student’s name and school. You may put more than one audition on the recording– only one audi-tion per MP3 please. Soloist must introduce themself by saying ONLY his or her name.
     
    The finalists will be posted on the IHSMA website by Wednesday, November 6th. Professor Snow will listen to all finalists on Thursday, November 21st in Ames. The site and time will be posted on the IHSMA website with the names of the finalists.

Directors - Be certain your students have the music for the festival adequately prepared for the chair placement auditions in Ames. Failure to perform the selections at All-State level will result in dismissal from the group.

 


  1. Each entry must consist of 1, 2, 3, or 4 singers auditioning on one of the following parts: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass. No duplication of voice part within an entry is allowed.
  2. The maximum number of entries for one school is 28 students - 7 singers per voice part. A student may appear in one entry only. Music need not be memorized for auditions.
  3. The number to be selected on each part at each audition center will be based on a percent of the total number entered from the entire state. A total of 600 voices will be selected - 150 on each choral (SATB) part. It is expected that students audition on a voice part that is appropriate for their vocal range. Vocal health of the student should be a primary concern. Auditors will be instructed to select only qualified singers regardless of quotas. Quotas will be figured after the initial auditions are completed.
  4. Auditioning ensembles will be identified to the auditor by ONLY: school code number, performance time, names of singers and voice parts. Be certain your students know their performance time! The school name may not appear on the audition card, music folder, or any article of clothing. Ensembles may not display the school name in any manner.
  5. Choral groups or individuals auditioning may NOT wear school concert attire for auditions (this includes robes, tuxedos, and formal gowns).
  6. Audition sites will post a list of accepted students and a list of singers to be recalled at the conclusion of the initial auditions.
  7. Materials to be used for auditions will be posted online (www.ihsma.org) at 5:00 AM and at each audition site at 8:00 A.M. on October 26, 2013.
  8. All vocal auditions are a cappella.
  9. For first round auditions, singers may get their starting pitches from:
    1. a singer in the ensemble using a pitch-pipe to play pitches;
    2. a singer in the ensemble playing pitches on a keyboard;
    3. a high school student, who is not a member of the auditioning ensemble, playing the pitches on a key-board.
  10. Each entry will be instructed to sing portions of the chosen All-State selections. A maximum of 7 minutes will be allotted for each audition. Students will be judged on the following factors: Intonation, Rhythm, Tone Quality, and Musicianship. 10 points will be awarded in each of the four categories, with the total score used to determine accepted and recalled students.
  11. All selections must be performed in the designated key.
  12. For recalls, singers will appear alone and sing their voice part unaccompanied. A qualified person designated by the audition manager will play pitches for recall. Pitch giving instructions will be provided with the recall excerpts.
  13. Singers will not be allowed to restart a selection once they have made it through a significant portion of a work. They may stop, get pitches, and then continue on if the performance has broken down to the point of warranting this action.
  14. In the interest of balancing sections, accepted vocalists will be posted as either I or II.
  15. Vocal entries must appear on the correct voice part as indicated on the registration. Illness or emergency circumstances may reduce an entry below the original registration, however a school may increase the number of participants only by following the provisions specified in Errors In Registration
  16. Director’s sets/Accompanists sets of the All-State music are the responsibility of the participating school and must be paid for by the director/district apart from their All-State registration.
  17. Auditioning groups may be asked to audition on the Jordan/Ballenger arrangement of "America the Beautiful" and the Wilhousky arrangement of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". Copies of these selections may be purchased by contacting Kephart's Music (800-369-9633).

  19. Zadok the Priest clarification: all straight eighth note patterns should be dotted eighth note patterns like those found in the accompaniment. Ex. m. 33 and m. 55- Alto II and Tenor should be: not . M. 41 Alto I and II - same thing.
  20. All-State Chorus Soloist -
    There is a soprano/alto solo in Tambourines by Gwyneth Walker.

    The audition CD/MP3 must be postmarked by Wednesday, October 30th. Please label the audition materials clearly with the student's name and school. You may put more than one audition on the recording– only one audition per MP3 please. Soloist must introduce themself by saying ONLY his or her name.
    Soprano/Alto Audition Selection: "Tambourines" (marked Sop. 1 or Solo) m. 76 beat 4 - 78, and/or m. 80 beat 4 - 82. Students may audition on both excerpts or either excerpt
    The audition must be a cappella.
    The finalists will be posted on the IHSMA website by Wednesday, November 6th. Professor Snow will listen to all finalists on Thursday, November 21st in Ames. The site and time will be posted on the IHSMA website with the names of the finalists.

 


The 2013 festival will need 2 piano players. Students auditioning for All-State Pianist must be an eligible member of the school's band, chorus or orchestra. Two pianists will be selected as accompanists for the All-State Chorus. The registration fee does NOT cover the cost of the music for the All-State piano players. Schools will need to make their own arrangements for the music performed by the chorus, including the patriotic numbers. Music may be purchased by contacting Kephart's Music (1-800-369-9633).

 

FIRST ROUND AUDITIONS:
The first round auditions will be held at each of the six district audition sites. Online registration for auditions is available to each school. Auditions are SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2013, AT 9:00 A.M.

Requirements For The First Round Auditions:

  1. The excerpts of the keyboard parts which are to be played will be posted online (www.ihsma.org) at 5:00 AM and at each audition site at 8:00 AM.
  2. Each candidate MUST prepare all of the keyboard parts of each All-State chorus selections, including the patriotic numbers. Candidates are to take all selections into the audition center.
  3. The candidate MAY use a student page-tuner in the audition.
  4. The candidate may take 5-10 seconds to familiarize him/herself with the piano in the audition center.
  5. The audition:
    1. The auditor will conduct the candidate on the designated excerpts.

    2. (The following items, b. and c., will not be posted on the day of auditions - the auditor will give the candidate instructions.)
    3. The auditor will instruct the candidate to find and play a vocal line.
    4. The auditor will ask the candidate to find and play the starting pitches of a section - the candidate should roll the pitches from the bottom to the top.
  6. The candidate will be judged on the ability to play the keyboard parts accurately at the required tempo, their ability to follow a conductor, and their ability to locate and accurately play choral parts and pitches (bottom to top).
  7. The candidate will not be required to play the open score.
  8. The auditor is not required to select any candidate for the second round, but may select one, two, or three pianists if the quality exists. Candidates selected on the first round will be posted during the morning session.

SECOND ROUND AUDITIONS:
Candidates selected for the second round MUST be available for the final selection process, which will be held at 11:00 A.M., WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2013 at the Iowa State University Music Building in Ames. (Please refer to numbers 2 through 8 in the First Round Audition.) Auditions are closed to the public. Two pianists will be selected to accompany the 2013 All-State Chorus.

Those selected to accompany the choir will be required at rehearsals on
Thursday evening, November 21st in Ames.

 

ALL-STATE FESTIVAL/FOOTBALL PLAY-OFF CONFLICTS

Conflicts between the All-State Music Festival and the state Football Play-Offs are unavoidable. Policies have been developed to resolve those conflicts within reasonable parameters. “Alternates” may be selected to fill positions in either the All-State Band or Orchestra as late as November 12. Vocal Alternates may be selected up until the 1st rehearsal of the All-State Chorus. If your district has a potential problem with such a situation, contact the IHSMA office at your earliest opportunity.

 

REGISTRATION OF STUDENTS IN AMES

All directors or chaperones must register participating students and pay the correct fees, if not prepaid, at the IHSMA Registration desk (middle floor lobby of Scheman Building) either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. Student registration forms will be sent prior to auditions. At this time ONE director will receive the registration packet, which includes identification name tags for all participants from that school. No student will be admitted to afternoon rehearsals without these name tags. Schools commuting must be registered in the same manner; names listed on the registration form and fee paid, with a notation that they will be commuting and not using the housing that has been arranged.
HOUSING RULES AND REGULATIONS

The rules and regulations have been established by the Iowa High School Music Association and will be strictly enforced. Directors and chaperones have no authority to grant exceptions.
 
Alan S. Greiner, Executive Director, IHSMA, is in charge of hotel arrangements. Housing requests are to be submitted online to the Iowa High School Music Association immediately following auditions. Chaperones must be housed in the same hotel as their students.
  1. There shall be no playing of instruments or singing from 11 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.
  2. Participants may meet only in rooms assigned to their sex unless a director is present. All parties involved will be dismissed from the All-State Festival if this rule is violated.
  3. Students are not to congregate in rooms other than those billed to their own school.
  4. Students must be in their rooms no later than 11:00 P.M. each night. Lights out and no noise after 11:30 P.M. All students must remain in their room until 6:30 A.M.
  5. Inadequate preparation, poor rehearsal attitudes and conduct not up to the highest standards of our best high school students will be considered sufficient reason for dismissal from the festival.
  6. Consider prepayment of festival fees. This will shorten the registration process at Ames. Fees and registration form should be received in the IHSMA office by November 15th.

 

CHAIR-PLACEMENT AUDITIONING PROCEDURES

All-State Orchestra: All orchestra members report to assigned audition rooms in the Scheman Building before 3 P.M. Thursday afternoon. Room assignments will be included in the students music folders. Benton Auditorium in the Scheman Building will be available at 2:45 p.m. for orchestra members to warm up. Members will be auditioned down to the last chair. Don’t forget music stands and pencils for rehearsals!! Students found inadequately prepared at the Thursday chair-placement auditions will be permitted a rehearing before a panel of three auditors at 8 A.M. Friday. Every effort will be made to have either a director or school representative present so dismissal, if necessary, can be attended to by the director/representative.
 :
All-State Band: All band students report to Benton Auditorium in the Scheman Building to find out their assigned audition room. Audition rooms will be included in the student’s music folders and auditions times will be posted on the IHSMA website approximately 5 days in advance of the festival. Benton Auditorium in the Scheman Building will be available at 4:30 p.m. for band members to warm up. Members will be auditioned to the last chair. Don’t forget music stands and pencils for rehearsals!! Students found inadequately prepared at the Thursday chair-placement auditions will be permitted a re-hearing before a panel of three auditors at 8 A.M. Friday. Every effort will be made to have either a director or school representative present so dismissal, if necessary, can be attended to by the director/representative.
 :
All-State Chorus: Seating assignment cards will be placed in registration packets. Directors MUST obtain these prior to the first scheduled rehearsal.

 

REHEARSALS
All groups will meet Friday morning at the following locations:

Band Hilton Coliseum
Orchestra Scheman Building, Rooms 220-240
Chorus C.Y. Stephens

Rehearsals are also held Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning and afternoon. The specific rehearsal schedule for each of the All-State ensembles will be mailed to auditioning schools prior to auditions. Check this very carefully. Attendance will be carefully checked at each rehearsal. Failure to attend all rehearsals will eliminate students from participation. Rehearsal schedules are interpreted as the actual starting time. Students should be in place at the designated time. Any All-State Chorus student who is late to rehearsal will check in with the All-State Chorus Chair. He/she will not rejoin the chorus but will sit with their director at the back of the chorus for the remainder of that rehearsal block of time. They may rejoin the chorus for the next rehearsal. A second incident of tardiness will result in automatic dismissal from the festival. Attendenc policies for the band and orchestra will be included in the folders of students accepted. No caps or hats are permitted at any rehearsal.

 

TICKETS

The ticket price will be $18. All seats are reserved. A group rate of $16 per ticket will be available on orders of 20 or more tickets ordered by a single purchaser. Online ticket sales will also begin October 28, 2013 at 10:00 AM.

 

ILLNESS

The All-State Chair must be notified if illness should prevent participation in the All-State groups. Band members, or their director, should telephone Chris Crandell, Grimes at 515-490-0417. Orchestra members, or their director, should telephone Ann Osborne, Indianola High School at 515-961-9510. Chorus members, or their director, should telephone Jackie Burk, Belmond-Klemme High School at 641-425-1037.

 

CONCERT DRESS

All-State Band Concert Attire - Men: wear BLACK suites or Tuxedos, white shirt with black neck/bow tie. Women: wear BLACK dress or pant suit, or long black dress, or black top and long black skirt. Any option should include sleeves past the shoulder. Orchestra women will wear long dresses and men will wear suits (formal black). Chorus members must wear choir robes.

 

MISCELLANEOUS ARRANGEMENTS
  1. Complimentary Tickets: Complimentary tickets for directors of participating students will be issued on the following basis: One ticket will be issued for each department represented in the All-State Festival ensembles; i.e., vocal = 1 ticket; orchestra = 1 ticket; band = 1 ticket. If a string player is accepted from a school without an orchestra program, a complimentary ticket will be awarded to the band program ONLY if that program had no players chosen for band. No director is entitled to more than a single complimentary ticket nor any district more than a total of three. Call the Association office if you have questions. All seats are reserved. Schools are responsible for securing tickets for drivers, chaperones, spouses of directors and student teachers.
  2. Check your calendar carefully. Do not enter students who may have a conflict with any activity. Each student must be available for all rehearsals in Ames.
  3. If your school is to be represented in Ames, you will receive a final mailing containing students’ names (for you to proof for spelling), directors’ responsibilities, complete rules and regulations, and a map of the Iowa State Center area.
